KBRN, Ternate— Solidaridad Network Indonesia Foundation (Solidaridad) and PT Sinar Hijau Ventures (SHV) are collaborating to strengthen social forestry businesses (KUPS) in Ternate, with a focus on nutmeg.
The program runs for two years, from December 2023 to December 2025, and aims to incubate and commercialize forest products, especially nutmeg.
To support this goal, Solidaridad and SHV held a nutmeg post-harvest training on October 4-6, 2024, at the Central Ternate District Office.
The training, “Preparing Ternate’s Nutmeg for the International Market,” was officially opened by the Head of the Ternate-Tidore Forest Management Unit (FMU), Ibrahim Tuheteru.
“This training is expected to strengthen the skills of KUPS members and leaders in Ternate,” said Ibrahim during the opening on Friday (October 4, 2024), as quoted by rri.co.id.
Ternate is a key area for nutmeg farming, with plantation land growing from 1,975 hectares in 2022 to 2,074 hectares in 2023.
Clove farming remains steady, with 1,248 hectares recorded in both years.
This training not only introduces the selection techniques and high-quality processing of nutmeg but also highlights the importance of passing on this knowledge to future generations.
In addition, nutmeg expert Risky Rahman from Solidaridad will explain the actionable steps for Ternate’s nutmeg to reach international markets.
Central Ternate District Head, Fahmi B. Amin hopes that local farmers will benefit from the training and apply what they learned to improve their product quality.
“Ternate’s nutmeg is already nationally recognized, and we hope this training becomes the first step for farmers to improve their quality standards and boost the market value of their products,” said Fahmi.
This program is expected to build an ecosystem that supports sustainable forest resource management, brings economic benefits to local communities, and protects the environment.
